Traveller and her children, begging by the railings of Merrion Square.

*Additional comment*
I met this family on a day I was wandering around town with my camera. I had a chat with the woman, I asked if I could take some pictures and she agreed. She prompted the children to smile for the photograph but they were a little shy, as is normal with many young children.
I was not attempting to make an earth-shattering statement. They were poor but they struck me as a "normal" family. The mother's attitude was realistic, "you do what you can to put food on the table". She had dignity, I think it shows.

I am overwhelmed, my personal favorite has a DD!
A huge thank you to =Tom-Ripley for suggesting it. It means a lot to me as Tom is a photographer who's work I admire and love. A big thank you to `Helewidis for featuring it. This is a good day!

This is from an old print, it's also cropped in a way I'm not thrilled with, the print is too big for the scanner. The entire print shows the children's feet and the blankets they were sitting on. There may be some light leaks from not being able to close the scanner lid properly.

"When I saw Traveller Family by =Eliza-mac I immediately thought of the "migrants of Dorothea Lange"... I like the strong glances of this family, as they seem both shy and proud!" - words by suggester

Tinkers?

I really like this photo. It reminds me of some of the photos taken during the depression over here.
A lot of your photos remind me of one of my favorite photographers Marion Post -Wolcott, the times are just different.

Travellers don't like to be called Tinkers,(though there are far worse derogatory names than that for them) there are no real tinkers here anymore. I saw one when I was a very small child, a traveller who went around remote parts of Donegal, mending pots and pans. I sat and watched him mend my aunt's old cooking pots. I was fascinated watching the man work. Travellers call themselves Pavees.

Thank you for the compliment. The American dust bowl/depression photographers are high on list of the all time greats

Oh..I thought Tinker just meant something like a gypsy, I didn't realize it was a bad term. :stupidme: So Pavees then is an okay term to use?

Tinker, gypsy, gypo, pikie, and the worst, knacker, are all no nos. I wasn't sure about pavee until I worked the Puck Fair, then I got to be on a pavee fortune teller's wall of fame =D I was dressed as Paris Hilton ;P

Oh boy Paris Hilton  :lmao: Did you take pictures?

Thank you for telling me about the terms. I guess it's a good thing that I never started a performance piece called the tinkers daughter then. Live and learn.

That's the weird one, there are plays, songs, etc that use the word Tinker. Most are sympathetic so the word doesn't offend so much.

Seriously... you do NOT want to see my Paris Hilton look :fear:

the only marks and/or stains I can see are on a society that would allow people to get into the poor state that family is in. And that goes for this country and any other.
:iconirishcompass:
Aww jeez it can't be that bad
